Over the years the Scottish Borders have been the birthplace of a variety of extraordinary human and equine heroes who have gone on to change the world in some way, be it sporting prowess, by inventing, discovering or in war. In 2009, the SEIB Borders Festival of the Horse has eight themed guided rides that will follow in the footsteps of great local names. The Borders are renowned for having some of the most varied and beautiful, yet accessible riding country in Britain. This Borders landscape that shaped such entrepreneurial and intrepid people and competitive and brave equines, today provides a network of tracks and beautiful rolling countryside that can be peacefully explored on horseback.

Kielder Forest Pleasure Ride

Sunday 25th October 2009

As we all know locally, Kielder has the largest man-made lake in Western Europe, 30 miles of shoreline and 1000 acres of forest. It is an experience for the whole family with cycling and walking routes, bird watching sites, sailing and fishing. Its also ideal for horse riding, although with most horses having the occasional unpredictable moment, long distance rides are safer and better when organised by Endurance GB.

On Sunday 25th October, Northumberland & Tyneside hosted the Kielder Forest Pleasure ride. The venue was at the Sandy Syke Coach Park with kind permission of the Forestry Commission. This is behind the Anglers Arms in Kielder Village. The routes included some of the Lakeside Way and offered distances of 32 km (19 miles), 19 km (12 miles) and 12 km (7 miles). Mobile phone coverage is poor for this area so Raynet looked after communications and St. John’s Ambulance where in attendance.

Due to parking space at Kielder, entries are limited to 50 horses allocated on a first come first served basis and unfortunately numerous applications had to be refused.

In true traditional Kielder weather, it was very wet and windy on the day. This did not deter horses or riders and, although slippery in some places, good times were recorded, in fact, several riders could be seen walking up and down before presenting to the time keeper as they had gone too fast!

All riders and horses had a great day, wet at the end, but all went away with smiling faces, rosettes and bars of chocolate.

At the time of writing we have two new pleasure rides for 2010 and are actively looking for more ride organisers to meet demand. We intend to run an evening at Dissington Hall for potential ride organisers along the theme that organising can be enjoyable when done with the help of the EGB Group. It’ll be open to all and anyone with an idea of a new route will be especially welcome.

Information about forthcoming events are published on our website as dates are fixed: www.egbnorthumberlandandtyneside.co.uk.

In the meantime, look round the website to see what was on offer in 2009. www.bordersfestivalhorse.org In 2009 the 8th SEIB Borders Festival of the Horse put the Borders area of Scotland firmly on the map with an 11-day extravaganza of over 40 events for both riders and spectators. The SEIB Borders Festival of the Horse, a unique celebration of everything that makes the Scottish Borders "Scotland's Horse Country", took place from May 15th to 26th 2009. The festival offered a packed programme of activities and events to interest riders and non-riders. Events in 2009 included a police horse demonstration, horse trials, alternative therapies and horse logging, with ten guided rides themed on 'Heroes, Heroines and Horses of the Borders'. The Borders Festival is unique in that it covers such a variety of disciplines and shows why this region is truly "Scotland's Horse Country".

EMAGIN is The British Horse Society’s Geographical Information System.

It offers the Society, its volunteers and members a vast range of benefits, the most important of which is to supply crucial and comprehensive data, statistics and imagery through the use of mapping to further support and strengthen the Society's work for every horse and rider.

Among the umbrella of benefits to the BHS itself, there are some excellent ways in which Emagin can be of direct use to the public. One of these is the Where to Ride service (see details below). As EMAGIN grows the range of benefits available will increase dramatically and this page will keep you informed of these.

The BHS hopes to launch EMAGIN online next year, and when this point is reached, members of the public will be able to view a wealth of BHS information, and specific comprehensive data on equestrian access throughout the UK and Ireland and their local areas.

Until the system is established online, the BHS website will provide progress updates. All queries should be directed to Sarah Shackleton, GIS Officer and Executive Access and Rights of Way, on 01926 707 812 or emagin@bhs.org.uk.

Mapping Britain on Horseback - BHS needs you!

The British Horse Society (BHS) has invited equestrians throughout the UK to help them take their mapping strategy to the next level. The aim is to record every equestrian route in the UK on the Society’s EMAGIN system.

EMAGIN® (Equine Mapping and Geographical Information Network) is a GIS-based tool for collecting equestrian data, such as where to ride or carriage drive, or where to find approved BHS riding centres. The British Horse Society hopes to collate enough information to map every equestrian route in the UK, including routes that may have unrecorded or under-recorded rights.

The BHS’s Access Department is asking members of the public to sign up as Mapping Volunteers and provide information on the routes they use.

The British Horse Society’s Head of Access, Heather Holmes, said: “This is a great opportunity for people who like to ride off-road to work with us on digitising the routes in their area. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering for the BHS, but weren’t quite sure what to do, this is a perfect opportunity to test the water, and help other riders by mapping your area. If you like it, you may wish to explore the possibility of becoming an Access and Bridleways Officer for the BHS, and so make a difference in your community now and for future generations.”

When signing up as a Mapping Volunteer, the BHS can provide printout maps of an area for the volunteer to mark up and return. Options are available for those who have their own mapping software, though this is not essential to participating in the project. The project aims to recruit at least 500 mapping volunteers spread throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The BHS is working with sponsors to provide GPS equipment and training for those who wish to become involved at a more serious level.

GIS Officer for the BHS, Sarah Shackleton, said: “Becoming a mapping volunteer requires as little or as much effort as you want – whether you’ve only ever ridden one route, have a full-time job and one afternoon a month you can spare us, or you’re retired, with plenty of local riding knowledge and time that you would like to invest in the project. You don’t even need a horse – your feet or a bicycle are fine to use too! Every bit of help will expand our EMAGIN system, providing information that will defend, extend and promote the equestrian rights of way network.”

If you are interested in becoming a mapping volunteer, contact Sarah Shackleton by email on emagin@bhs.org.uk, stating which part of the UK you are interested in mapping.

For further information, please contact BHS Press Officer Alison Coleman, on 01926 707737, or communications@bhs.org.uk

Current harvesting sites continued....

Lamb Crags - South Reservoir -There are no formal facilities within or around the site. Due to the size of the site a long term crow closure has been applied for.

Kershope Forest-Pennine Way is adjacent to the site, though should have no affect on operations. A CROW restriction is in place.

Kershope Forest -The Border County Ride uses the road along the west section. However, there is currently a diversion in place due to operations at Stile Crag, therefore it is proposed that the diversion will be left in place. A CROW restriction has been granted.

The Comb - The Border County Ride follows the road to the west of the coupe, this should not affect operations. A CROW closure is has been approved for the site.

Lewisburn-A public bridleway runs along the road at the south of the site. Use of this road will be limited during operations and information signs will be put up on the approach to the site. There are also trails around the site, as above suitable signage will be put in place. A CROW restriction has been granted for the site.

Redesdale - A bridleway and FC trail (Border County Ride) use the roads surrounding the coupe. There are no routes through the coupe, therefore, suitable signage and other controls should be sufficient to manage public access. A CROW closure has been granted for the site.
